The Continental Tobacco Group supports domestic tobacco cultivation by increasing the purchase price
The Continental Tobacco Industry Group is supporting domestic tobacco cultivation by increasing the basic tobacco purchase price, the company group told MTI on Tuesday.
According to the announcement, DOFER Dohányfermentáló Zrt., which belongs to the Continental Tobacco Group and is responsible for about a third of domestic tobacco production, increased the basic purchase price of tobacco fixed in the 2023 contract by 50 percent. It was emphasized that the step is important in stopping the decline of domestic tobacco cultivation, the contracted areas have increased compared to the total area contracted last year. It is recalled that tobacco cultivation in Hungary has faced significant challenges in recent years, which appeared both in the amount of contracted tobacco growing areas and in the results of the harvest and tobacco purchase period. The future processing of the tobacco grown on the contracted tobacco areas will be ensured by Continental Tobacco Zrt., which also belongs to the Continental Tobacco Group and owns the tobacco factory in Sátoraljaújhely, the announcement states.
That is why tobacco cultivation is important in our country
Csaba Füzi, CEO of Continental Tobacco Zrt., emphasized in the announcement that boosting domestic tobacco cultivation is important for the entire tobacco industry. Due to the high manual labor demand of tobacco cultivation, it continues to play a decisive role in the employment of the population living in the cultivation districts with unfavorable conditions for cultivation, and in maintaining the population retention power of the countryside. The Continental Tobacco Group is a Hungarian family-owned private company, which was founded in 1996 in Hódmezővásárhely, and currently employs around 700 workers. The company group’s products are available in more than 30 countries outside the Hungarian market. The group of companies includes DOFER Dohányfermentáló Zrt. in Szolnok, where, in addition to tobacco production, they are responsible for the tobacco leaf processing process, as well as the more than 130-year-old tobacco factory in Sátoraljaújhely.
The company group also has subsidiaries in Italy, Germany, Romania and Slovakia
