The average price of white sugar on the world market decreased by 9 percent
The average price of white sugar on the world market in May 2024 was 512 euros/ton, almost 9 percent lower than in April. On the London Mercantile Exchange (LIFFE), the front-month quote for white sugar dropped from 560 dollars (USD)/ton on July 8, with fluctuations, to 541 dollars/ton on July 19. The front-month contract for raw sugar followed this trend and settled at $411/ton on July 19.
According to data from the European Commission, the average price of white sugar in the EU in May 2024 was 828 euros/ton, unchanged compared to the previous month. For data protection reasons, the European Union cannot publish the processing price of white sugar per member country, so it forms three regional average prices from the reported data of the member countries and makes them public. In May, the average price of region 1 (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia) was 774 euros/ton, about 1 percent less than the previous month. The average price of the dominant producing countries belonging to region 2 (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium) was 838 euros/ton, decreasing by approximately 1 percent during the observed period. Region 3, which includes the southern countries, Bulgaria, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Romania, reached the highest average price, 876 euros/ton, which was 1 percent lower than the previous month.
