The world market price of white sugar decreased slightly
The average world market price of white sugar in July 2023 was EUR 610/ton, 3 percent lower than in June. On the London Mercantile Exchange (LIFFE), the front-month quote for white sugar fluctuated from $730 (USD)/ton on August 30 to $747/ton on September 5, and then decreased to $627/ton on September 8.
The front-month quote for raw sugar started at $559/ton at the beginning of the period under review, and settled at $580/ton by the end of the period.
According to data from the European Commission, the average price of white sugar in the EU (821 euros/ton) in July 2023 did not change significantly compared to the previous month
The European Union cannot publish the processing price of white sugar per member country for data protection reasons, so it forms three regional average prices from the data reported by the member countries and makes them public. In July, the average price of the 1st region (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia) was 810 euros/ton, it did not change during the observed period. The average price of the dominant producing countries belonging to region 2 (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium) was 806 euros/ton, the same as the previous month. The 3rd region, which includes the southern countries, Bulgaria, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Romania, reached the highest average price, 915 euros/ton, which was 2 percent higher than the previous month.
According to preliminary data from the European Commission, the Community’s sugar imports in 2022/2023. economic year was 2,389 thousand tons until August 18, 57 percent more than a year earlier. At the same time, sugar exports amounted to 490,000 tons, 61 percent less than the previous year.
