The world market price of white sugar has risen
The average world market price of white sugar in September 2023 was EUR 685/ton, almost 8 percent higher than in August. On the London Mercantile Exchange (LIFFE), the front-month quote for white sugar dropped from 741 dollars (USD)/ton on November 22, with fluctuations, to 697 dollars/ton on December 1. The front-month quote for raw sugar started at $612/ton at the beginning of the period under review, and settled at $553/ton by the end of the period.
According to data from the European Commission, the average price of white sugar in the EU in October 2023 was 841 euros/ton, an increase of approximately 3 percent compared to the previous month. The European Union cannot publish the processing price of white sugar per member country for data protection reasons, so it forms three regional average prices from the data reported by the member countries and makes them public. In October, the average price of region 1 (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia) was 805 euros/ton, about 3 percent higher than the previous month. The average price of the dominant producing countries belonging to region 2 (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium) was 841 euros/ton, an increase of 3 percent in the observed period. Region 3, which includes the southern countries, Bulgaria, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Romania, reached the highest average price of 914 euros/ton, which was 1 percent less than the previous month.
