Nursery plants accounted for a significant part of ornamental plant production in 2024
Among the ornamental plant product groups, nursery plants occupied the largest area in 2024, totaling 1,355 hectares, which represented 93.1 percent of the total area used. Nursery plants were almost entirely grown outdoors, as 99.3 percent of production was done this way. The share of covered cultivation area was only 0.1 percent, similar to previous years.
Of the total area used for ornamental plant production, cut flowers and cut greens were grown on 2.5 percent, while potted and bulb ornamental plants were grown on 4.4 percent. The distribution of areas used for cut flower production was as follows: 45.4 percent was outdoors, 42.8 percent was covered, heated, and 11.8 percent was covered, unheated. In the case of potted and bulbous plants, the vast majority of cultivation, 88.0 percent, took place in covered and heated areas, 5.2 percent in covered, unheated areas, while 6.8 percent took place in open fields, according to the 2024 data provider reports.
Nursery plant production continues to be the segment with the largest area requirement in ornamental plant production.
At the same time, a clear shift towards covered, intensive cultivation methods can be observed in ornamental plant production as a whole, especially in the case of potted plants. This development means greater independence from seasonality and weather risks for growers, but also involves higher investment costs.
