In the competition of sports chains, Decathlon shows outstanding results in Hungary, while its competitors, such as Hervis, accumulate significant losses. Decathlon, the French-owned sports goods and sportswear retail chain, has maintained its profitability in 2023 despite a slight decline in revenues. The company’s net sales were around HUF 80 billion, and operating profit increased to HUF 6.9 billion, compared to HUF 3.7 billion in the previous year.

In contrast, Hervis, which is a subsidiary of Spar Austria, posted a loss of more than HUF 2 billion in 2023, showing a significant decrease compared to previous years. After the company’s sales revenue of 18.4 billion in 2022, it only reached HUF 16.3 billion in 2023, while its loss from operating activities exceeded HUF 2 billion. To make matters worse, this is the second year in a row that Hervis has been operating at a loss, which can cause concern among owners and customers alike.

The key to Decathlon’s success lies in part in the company’s ability to adapt to market challenges and manage costs efficiently, while maintaining a high level of customer experience and product quality. On the other hand, Hervis’s difficulties highlight the fact that the competition in the sporting goods market is becoming more and more fierce, and only those players who are able to respond to changing customer needs with innovative solutions and effective cost management can stay afloat.
