The goal is to double the domestic use of geothermal energy by 2030
The government wants to double the use of geothermal energy by 2030, based on the National Geothermal Utilization Concept adopted last year, said the Deputy State Secretary for Energy Policy of the Ministry of Energy (EM) in Felsőpakony on Friday.
At the closing event of an innovation project aimed at developing a heat storage unit at the Thermofoam Packaging Technology Kft. site, Márk Alföldy-Boruss spoke about the fact that it is the first time a decision has been made on a Hungarian proposal to establish a unified European Union program in order to further exploit the potential of geothermal energy.
He added that district heating currently provides heat to nearly 700,000 homes and about 15,000 institutions, shopping centers, and sports facilities in Hungary.
Geothermal energy will also play a significant role in replacing the currently predominantly natural gas-based supply, which is why the government supports the professional association’s proposal to introduce new financial incentives, for example in the aforementioned areas – the deputy state secretary added.
Márk Alföldy-Boruss explained: heat is generated in numerous industrial and agricultural processes, but it is wasted because the place of potential utilization is far from the place of emission and there is no means of transport or storage.
Traditional large-scale industrial complexes, such as iron foundries or oil refineries, but even the most modern supercomputers produce a huge amount of heat, which is still unused today.
The innovation project implemented at the Thermofoam Packaging Technology Kft. site provides an answer to this problem – he added.
