The Brussels Mercosur agreement is another attack on European farmers and agriculture
The Brussels Mercosur agreement is another attack on European farmers and agriculture – the Minister of Agriculture wrote on his Facebook page on Friday.

István Nagy added that the agreement is harmful to European farmers because it would allow cheap, more loosely regulated South American agricultural products to enter the EU market, while European producers work with strict environmental, animal welfare and food safety standards, with higher costs, thus putting them at a competitive disadvantage. Purchase prices are falling, rural jobs are at risk and import dependence is increasing. In the video accompanying the post, István Nagy highlighted that Brussels still does not care about the future of farmers and European agriculture. At the same time, he indicated that the Hungarian position is clear. They reject any agreement that threatens the competitiveness of Hungarian farmers. The EU-Mercosur agreement, the Brussels-Ukraine free trade pact, and the reduction of EU agricultural subsidies mean the execution of European agriculture. “Our daily bread cannot be part of political games. We stand with farmers because we cannot risk their livelihood and European food security. There is no other option but to continue fighting, because we must preserve our food self-sufficiency and sovereignty. And we cannot give in to this either!” – declared the minister.
