The shopping trolley is rolling and the clock is ticking!
At the moment Express Checkout is being used in seven METRO stores, speeding up the shopping process for professional buyers. Our magazine interviewed head of store operations Péter Tóth-Korom.

METRO
Rapid shopping: customers don’t have to unpack and pack their carts at the checkout, as the cash register validates the products in the shopping trolley in about 5 seconds. Customers need to use a handheld scanner or an application downloaded to their mobile phone for scanning the barcodes of selected items when shopping. Payment is done with the help of a QR code, which connects the device with the cash register.
How does payment work?
At the checkout floor scales weigh the products in the cart and if the result matches the warehouse weight data, the checkout process takes less than 30 seconds with card payment.
What results would you consider a success?
The project was launched in early December last year. In the first 3 months – depending on the given stores – 5-8 percent of paid invoices and 10-15 percent of products sold passed through the Express Checkout. Our goal is to reach 15 percent in the former and 25 percent in the latter category by the end of the year.

Where can METRO customers use the new service?
In the first 3 months the Budaörs, Ferencváros and East Pest METRO stores were offering the new service. From early March Budakalász, Győr, Szombathely and Székesfehérvár joined. I am happy to say that 90 percent of purchases are flawless, so the technology is working very well.(x)
