The producer price of lamb rose by 16-18 percent
According to data from the European Commission, the European Union’s sheep and goat imports (live animals and meat) were 170,000 tons in 2023, which represents a 3.7 percent increase compared to the previous year. The largest supplier was the United Kingdom and New Zealand with a share of 94 percent.

The amount of sheep and goat meat and live animals sold on the international market (102.3 thousand tons) did not change significantly in 2023. The largest target markets were the United Kingdom (18 percent), Jordan (18 percent share), and Saudi Arabia (16 percent). In the European Union, the price of lamb developed in accordance with seasonal effects in the first eleven weeks of the year. The price of light lamb was 7 percent higher and the price of heavy lamb was 4.5 percent higher compared to the same period of the previous year.
According to KSH data, Hungary’s sheep population was 907.1 thousand on December 1, 2023, an increase of 4 percent compared to December 2022
The number of ewes did not change significantly, there were 694 thousand individuals in the same comparison. The volume of Hungary’s live lamb exports increased by 2.5 percent (to 10.5 thousand tons) and its value by 3.3 percent (to HUF 18.2 billion) in 2023 compared to 2022. Italy, which accounted for almost 70 percent of exports, saw 6.5 percent more sheep, while exports to Germany decreased by 28 percent. The volume of live lamb imports increased by 84 percent (72 tons) in 2023 compared to the volume of the previous year.
