Beyond the Balaton hedge

When we say Lake Balaton, everyone thinks of Lake Balaton. Rolled in paprika flour, fried in oil. But let’s celebrate Balaton Fish Day with perch instead of pike! At least it’s really Balaton. Although we Hungarians are not famous for our fish consumption, it is still worth jumping into the Hungarian sea to see if we can find something we like.

If there were goldfish in Lake Balaton, they would surely want people to eat more fish. Especially on Balaton Fish Day, which we celebrate at the end of July.

Many people are annoyed by the fact that the majority of domestic fish consumption is made up of Christmas fried fish and fish soup

There are those who simply don’t like the taste, or are put off by the smell, perhaps because of the string or simply cannot find a reliable source of purchase, which is why the fish is usually left off the tables. It’s extremely healthy though. It is not only a perfect source of protein, but also a source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 cannot be produced by the body, so we should consume much more of it in natural form. It also contains a lot of vitamins, iron, calcium and iodine. If someone eats meat-free, fish is still a perfect alternative. And KMÉ helps you choose high-quality fish meat.

There are still people who believe that the Balaton heck is from Balaton

Not really. What’s more, unfortunately, even in the waters of Europe, they only occasionally swim. There are about 42 species of fish in the Hungarian sea, of course, only a fraction of them are native. Of course, this immediately brings to mind the crispy fried fish smelling of fresh white bread. Few people who like fish can resist catfish paprikash. The advantage of this fish is that it is relatively boneless, so even children can safely eat it. Carp is a real low-fat delicacy. However, you have to be very careful with it so as not to injure yourself with the thread. The king of Balaton fish is the perch. Baked, fried, whole, everything is excellent. Although Hungarians love fish soup, it is almost forbidden to make it from perch, because it is a sin to cook its delicious meat.

However you want to use it, always try to choose fresh fish from a reliable source. Thawed fish must not be refrozen. There are few rules, a lot of attention, but it is worth it for our health and an excellent dish.
