The Schwarz Group, parent company of Lidl and Kaufland, has extended its partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation until 2030, committing to major reductions in virgin plastic use across its private-label packaging.

According to the renewed Global Commitment signed in October, the group aims to cut virgin plastic in primary packaging by 5% and in all single-use packaging by 15% compared to 2018 levels.

This initiative is part of the Schwarz Group’s circular economy strategy, Reset Resources, which sets binding guidelines across all business units and countries. Florian Schütze, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Schwarz Corporate Affairs, emphasized that a functioning circular economy is a strategic necessity and key to global resource sovereignty.

Reset Resources outlines principles and goals in packaging, product design, construction, food waste, recycling, and recovery processes.

The Schwarz Group has been a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s network since 2018, joining over 300 companies, governments, NGOs, and initiatives working toward a circular economy.

One example of the partnership’s impact is Lidl’s circular textile collection, launched in stores in April. The collection is made of at least 98% cellulose-based fibers and contains an average of 5% recycled material, reflecting the group’s commitment to sustainable innovation.
