2024 could be a record year for Hungarian tourism
During the first three months of the year, accommodations in Hungary recorded 7.1 million guest nights, a 14 percent increase over the same period last year.
According to the National Tourism Data Supply Center (NTAK), not only Budapest but all tourist regions in the country saw increased traffic, with the Sopron-Fertő area registering a standout 32 percent growth. The number of guests also rose to 2.9 million, an 18 percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2023. Domestic tourists accounted for 3.3 million overnight stays, making up 72 percent of all guest nights, while the number of foreign visitors grew by nearly a quarter.
The most popular destinations included Lake Balaton leading with 877,000 guest nights, followed by Mátra-Bükk and the surroundings of Budapest. Traffic also increased at rural accommodations in Hungary, where hotels accounted for 63 percent of the usage. Spending at catering places also rose, generating a total of 404 billion HUF, which is a 13 percent increase compared to last year.
