The producer price of lamb increased by 20 percent
According to data from the European Commission, the European Union’s sheep and goat imports (live animals and meat) were 56.4 thousand tons in January-April 2024, which means a decrease of 8.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest supplier was the United Kingdom and New Zealand with a share of 93.5 percent.
The amount of sheep and goat meat and live animals sold on the international market (34.5 thousand tons) decreased by 5.4 percent compared to January-April 2023. In the European Union, the price of light lamb developed in accordance with seasonal effects in the first twenty-nine weeks of the year, expressed in euros, it was 15.3 percent higher compared to the same period of the previous year.
The price of heavy lamb rose by 13.6 percent at the same time
According to KSH data, the volume of Hungary’s live lamb exports increased by 21 percent (4.7 thousand tons) and its value by 33 percent (to HUF 8.7 billion) in January-April 2024 compared to a year earlier. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of light and heavy lamb in Hungary rose by 20 percent in January-June 2024 compared to the average price of the same period in 2023. The average price of light lamb was 1,870 forints/kilogram (+19 percent), and that of heavy lamb was 1,761 forints/kilogram (+21 percent) in the first six months.
