SPAR Hungary is 20 years old
SPAR Magyarország Kereskedelmi Kft. celebrates its 20th birthday this year. The group opened the first store in Tata in 1991. SPAR Hungary’s annual consolidated turnover was HUF 381.32 billion in 2010. Despite the difficult economic environment SPAR managed to preserve its strong market position and competitiveness, while also opening three new SPAR supermarkets and converting 57 former Plus stores in 2010. Currently 399 units make up the chain that employs 13,390 people – being one of the biggest employers in the country. With the ‘Our Hungary, our SPAR’ campaign the company promoted numerous excellent Hungarian products, increasing their sales greatly. SPAR’s nearly 2,000 private label products realised 20 percent of total sales, thanks to their popularity as good quality products that give value for money. By the end of last year there were 2 million SuperShop card holders and the company introduced mobile payment as well. Company communication via facebook, twitter, iwiw and Youtube also started. SPAR works together with 1,000 domestic suppliers and invested HUF 150 billion in Hungary in the last 20 years. The 20th birthday is a good occasion for renewal: ‘SPAR – A GOOD DECISION! CHEAPER THAN BEFORE!’ is the message that conveys the company’s 2011 business activity the best.
