18+! Will cola be next after the energy drink?
According to the new regulations coming into force in Hungary, it will be forbidden to sell or serve energy drinks to people under the age of 18 if the caffeine content of the drink exceeds 15mg/100ml. The purpose of the bill submitted by KDNP politicians is to protect the younger age group, however, according to the Hungarian Energy Drink Association, the proposal is discriminatory and applies a double standard.
The draft law was created as a reaction to an earlier announcement that the purchase of energy drinks would be prohibited for those under the age of 18. According to the Hungarian Energy Drink Association, the proposal is not appropriate, as they believe that, based on the caffeine and sugar content, the same action should be taken against cola, which is often consumed by young people. According to the association, this move discriminates against energy drinks from other sugary and caffeinated drinks.
The regulation is expected to have a significant impact on the sale and consumption of energy drinks in Hungary. Energy drinks are often consumed by young people, and as a result of the planned restrictions, these drinks may also disappear from vending machines, as it is not possible to check the age of customers there. The association still insists that anything containing caffeine is not recommended for children, and says energy drinks are more for healthy adults who need a quick boost of energy and alertness.
