The head of the ministry pointed out that pigeon and rabbit meat are healthy raw materials and food sources with excellent content values. In addition, breeding – whether domestic ornamental and commercial pigeon breeds or domestic rabbit breeds – contributes to the preservation of genetic resources and biological diversity. A significant part of our animal and plant species developed in the Carpathian Basin has been preserved, which is extremely important not only for our past, but also for our future, he added. He emphasized that dealing with pigeons and small animals is a community-building force. Common passion, common interest, common successes and memories create a strong bond in which traditions and cultural values are passed down from generation to generation. This community carries values such as solidarity, responsibility towards each other, nature and the environment.

István Nagy also spoke about the economic benefit of pigeon breeding and rabbit breeding

The agricultural ministry provides support for the purchase of commercial pigeons, breeders have been able to apply for it since 2019, and so far they have supported this activity with HUF 117 million. Hungary produces high-quality rabbit meat, which is in demand throughout Europe. Rabbit meat is one of the healthiest types of meat, one of the most important sources of protein, with minimal fat content, yet it can be prepared in a variety of ways and deliciously. Domestic consumption increased from 2 percent to 10 percent. Based on all of this, it seems that we are starting to rediscover the value of pigeon and rabbit meat, the products are appearing in markets, shops and restaurants, the minister underlined.

The head of the ministry greeted the Hungarian Pigeon and Pet Breeders National Association on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of its establishment, and the Gyomai and Endrődi Pigeon and Pet Breeders Associations on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of their establishment. Abbéli expressed his hope that, as a result of joint work and support, more and more successes will be recorded in the field.
