Lidl already has 130 stores
Lidl is one of Germany’s ten biggest food retailers and owns one of Europe’s biggest food discount store chains, with more than 2,700 stores in 23 countries. Lidl’s sales declined by nearly 1 percent in Germany last year. In the last six years Lidl’s sales have been soaring in Hungary, expanding by two-digit numbers year after year. Lidl started with 18 stores in 2004 and now they operate 130. They sell products manufactured in Germany under their own brand names. The company does not make costly or risky investments; this is the reason why they only appeared in former socialist countries after their accession to the EU.
