Róbert Zsigó: the price of basic foodstuffs is noticeably decreasing as a result of the margin freeze
The introduction of the margin cap has noticeably reduced the price of basic foodstuffs, emphasized Róbert Zsigó, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation (KIM), based on the latest data, in the Kossuth Radio program Good morning, Hungary! on Wednesday.
He explained that since the introduction of the margin cap on March 17, the price of 884 products has decreased by an average of 18.1 percent, within this there is a spread, the price of 21 products has decreased by more than 50 percent.
The data shows that the measure had to be taken, since previously the retail chains made extra profits on basic foodstuffs. This is shown by the fact that the price reduction for 98 products has been between 40-50 percent as a result of the measure, he highlighted.
Róbert Zsigó recalled that the government decided to introduce the margin cap in 30 basic food categories. The most important aspect in the decision was what families and the elderly buy the most. The most important goal of the measure is to protect families and pensioners from excessive and unjustified price increases.
The State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance said: the authorities are constantly monitoring compliance with the measure, 205 inspections have been held so far, no violations have occurred so far, so far it has not been typical for retail chains to pass on the profit reduction to other foods, but if this were to happen, they will take immediate action
– the State Secretary stated.
Róbert Zsigó also said that there is no food shortage and that there is no reason for anyone to stockpile.
