As Katalin Czippán, chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Tiszta Út Foundation and advisor to the Environmental Sustainability Institute of the National University of Public Service, put it, the word education covers those intentional, conscious actions with which we want to change the thinking, attitude, actions, or even the value system of others, in this case in order for humanity to live on this planet for a long time. Why is green education important? What is its legal and public education background, and what results, good practices, and examples can we currently report on in public education, the corporate and civil spheres in Hungary? The latest compilation of Körkörös.hu was prepared based on the writings of the study volume entitled Zöldgazdaság.

Political aspirations

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), economic results in the future will be influenced by how successful the green transition is and how successful they are in attracting the employees who will help it. According to a survey conducted in 2023, systems thinking and continuous, lifelong learning are the most important criteria for solving the next crises in the labor market. So whether we look at it from an economic perspective or from the perspective of moving towards sustainable development, learning and the education that supports it play a key role in achieving success, explained Katalin Czippán.

Among the sustainable development goals that were adopted by the UN member states in 2015 with a public outcry and prepared with Hungarian co-leadership and aimed at transforming our world, the fourth is about quality education, which sets the goal of ensuring that every student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to promote sustainable development. The European Council stated in 2010 that people should be equipped with the knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes necessary for informed choice, and in June 2022, the member states of the European Union accepted the recommendation of the “Green Deal” program on learning about the green transition and sustainable development – we read in the expert’s article, who also explains that education should start at the lowest possible level of public education, but it is important that this approach is continued at every stage of the process, and what we expect from institutions should also be communicated in all other forums and communities.

Surveys have proven that the criteria of young people about to start a job today include whether the given organization operates sustainably, what it does in the spirit of social responsibility, and whether it is committed to protecting the environment
