WWF Hungary: We can live in harmony with ourselves and nature if we consume more consciously
This year, August 1st is the day of overconsumption – this day marks the time when humanity’s consumption in that year exceeds the Earth’s resources that can be regenerated in a year. From this day on, for the rest of the year, we consume the natural “capital” of our planet, which is by definition unsustainable in the long term. Not only the Earth, but we ourselves would be better off if we paid attention to our consumption.
According to the data of the Global Footprint Network, on August 1 this year, humanity’s consumption will exceed the level that the Earth can reproduce or absorb in one year – in 1970, we reached the limit of overconsumption on December 23. Compared to the world average, the Hungarian figure is even worse, because our consumption is such that if everyone lived like us, we would have used up the Earth’s resources for the whole year in less than 5 months – for us, the turning point came on May 25. since we have been using up our planet’s reserves on a Hungarian scale.
“Under the influence of economic politicians, marketers and social media, we have driven ourselves into such a mindless consumerism that makes us believe that it is normal to jump to Milan for dinner, and that if you have not been to Bali, you are not human. Let’s not fall for stupid trends and harmful advertising, use our common sense and do as our grandparents did. The most important things we can do for ourselves and the planet: eat less meat, insulate our buildings, fly and drive less. And the money and working time saved in this way can be used to create healthier local communities, spend quality time with our family and loved ones at home or in nature, instead of hiding in our gadgets stuffed with advertisements and looking for instant dopamine”
– said Artúr Szilágyi, WWF Hungary’s climate protection expert.
