Wizz Air improved all key punctuality metrics this summer, while operating more flights than ever before, with a record number of passengers. In addition to Wizz Air’s own extraordinary measures, the improvement also required better performance from Hungarian air traffic control, the airline told MTI on Thursday.

It was highlighted that between May and August, Wizz Air had more than 2.6 million passengers in Hungary, 13 percent more than in the same period last year. During the four months, the airline operated almost 12,000 flights from Budapest and Debrecen. However, the increasing flight numbers did not cause any significant delays.

Wizz Air’s on-time performance, which measures punctual departures and arrivals, improved by more than 63 percent compared to the same period last year in Hungary.

Around 70 percent of its flights took off within fifteen minutes of their scheduled departure. The rate of delays of more than three hours was only 0.5 percent during this period – these longer delays typically occur because the airline is working to avoid canceling a given flight in order to get its passengers to their chosen destination.

The statement explains: flight cancellations were mainly necessary this summer due to the Middle East crisis and airspace closures, apart from this, Wizz Air only canceled 6 flights to Hungary due to the strike of air traffic controllers in France and the closure of Birmingham airport.

According to their summary, punctuality indicators improved not only in Hungary, but also across Wizz Air’s entire network during the summer, while the airline had an aircraft take off every minute and a half on average. Wizz Air reached a thousand flights per day in July this year, with more than 200 thousand passengers on board. This month, the airline operated 99.8 percent of its flights, the best performance in Europe. Between May and August, almost 24.5 million passengers flew with the airline on around 120,000 flights.

HungaroControl played an important role in the improvement of Wizz Air’s results, providing significantly greater control capacity than last year, both in the short-haul area – in handling departing and arriving flights – and in the high-altitude areas, where overflight traffic is controlled. Thanks to this, efficiency was significantly increased on the southeastern axis, of which Hungary is a part, despite a 5 percent increase in traffic towards Europe. HungaroControl’s performance was also highlighted in the latest report by Eurocontrol, the European air traffic organization and controller, they wrote.
