Waberer’s Group: the first railway trains carrying finished cars from BMW’s Debrecen factory have departed
The first rail trains carrying finished cars have departed from BMW’s Debrecen factory, which is being handled by Waberer’s rail logistics subsidiary PSP Rail – the Waberer’s group told MTI on Thursday.
It was emphasized that the project is based on a rail solution as opposed to road transport, which significantly reduces the ecological footprint.
Within the framework of the contract, which generates tens of millions of euros in revenue and runs until 2031, the group of companies ensures regular rail transport of finished cars across Europe to ports, from where the cars continue their journey to many markets around the world – including the United States and China. A significant cooperation is beginning in the Hungarian automotive industry.
According to the information, in the first phase of the delivery, which started in March, Waberer’s rail logistics subsidiary, PSP Rail, will carry out a large-volume transport of finished cars by rail for the BMW Group. The project is expected to be ramped up in stages, with rail service expanding further from 2027, while the routes served will also cover several strategic European sea terminals.
Zsolt Barna, Chairman and CEO of the Waberer’s Group, emphasized in the statement that they are proud that one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, the BMW Group, has chosen them as a strategic partner in this highly significant logistics project. This order is not only a recognition of the Waberer’s Group’s rail logistics competence, but also the international success of the Hungarian logistics sector. The project fits perfectly into the long-term strategy of the company group, the central element of which is the rise of environmentally friendly, intermodal solutions, he added.
The announcement details that the complex logistics task is implemented by the Waberer’s group with the most modern technological background. The group’s rail logistics subsidiary, PSP Rail, is responsible for the operational management of the transportation, and the group has implemented a significant capacity expansion for the project.
A special equipment park, 110 newly developed and manufactured railway wagons, specifically optimized for car transport, were put into service, which have the most modern safety and fastening technology. The transport is assisted by the most modern Siemens Vectron electric locomotives, guaranteeing efficiency and low emissions along the entire European route.
The project is of paramount importance in terms of sustainability and is fully in line with the guidelines of the European Union’s Green Deal, which calls for the transfer of transport volumes from road to rail. The railway service of the BMW factory in Debrecen removes thousands of trucks from public roads every year, drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions and the burden on the environment and road infrastructure, the statement said.
The tender won in 2024 is the result of about one and a half years of preparatory work, which was preceded by an intensive planning, procurement and infrastructure development phase. The complexity and strategic importance of the contract necessitated a significant capacity expansion and organizational strengthening of the rail logistics business. Winning the new order strengthens Waberer’s position among the leading logistics service providers in Central Europe. and at the same time confirms the strategic correctness of investments in the rail logistics segment – informed the Waberer’s group.
The Waberer’s group is a leading road logistics company in Europe with its own fleet, and the leading complex logistics service provider in Hungary. The group also has a leading position in the Hungarian market in the field of insurance related to vehicles and transportation.
