Water champions, aid organizations and food industry companies together drew attention to the key to the future
The food challenges caused by global and regional water shortages were presented at Monday’s event organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Hungarian Food Bank Association and the Ministry of Agriculture on the occasion of World Food Day in Hősök Square. Olympic and world champion swimmers and water polo players also visited the “water event”, but the water-friendly foods of the future and a line of 21 trucks, which delivered 50,000 kilograms of food donations to the needy, also played a role.
Water is the basis of our life, an indispensable natural resource, but unfortunately it is not inexhaustible. Today, 2.4 billion people live in countries affected by water scarcity, and their number is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. The negative effects of droughts, lack of precipitation and rising average temperatures are already felt in Central Europe. Now is the time for all of us to manage water more wisely, because our everyday decisions also affect its condition and availability. Avoiding water pollution and waste, using reuse methods, and favoring local, seasonal and fresh food are also important pillars of this struggle.
“One of our most important natural resources is water – it’s like the air we breathe. It is the cornerstone of our nutrition and agricultural production, which provides livelihoods for billions of people. Investing in innovative and efficient water management solutions is vital, and everyone from governments to individuals has a role to play in making the change, for a water-efficient and resilient world.”
– said Nabil Gangi, acting head of the European and Central Asian Regional Office of the FAO.
