Debate at Aldi’s new checkouts: speed or stress?
In Austria, Aldi’s new checkout system equipped with double bank card terminals has sparked serious controversy – reported vg.hu, following 5min.at. The goal of the store chain was to speed up the payment process, reduce queuing and improve the customer experience, but reactions are strongly divided.
The essence of the new system is that two bank card terminals operate at one checkout. While one customer is still packing or finishing payment, the one behind him can start his own transaction. According to Aldi, this will optimize customer flow and make checkouts significantly faster.
However, customer feedback is far from clear. Some say the new system really saves time, makes checkout more practical and smoother. Others, however, find it particularly confusing and stressful, as it is difficult to keep up with the fast-paced process. Several said that instead of completing the shopping in a relaxed manner, it has become a tense race between packing and paying.
Many of the critics prefer traditional self-service checkouts, where you can shop at your own pace. However, Aldi insists that the innovation could contribute to increasing efficiency and reducing queuing in the future.
