Deposit Return System: Major progress in beverage packaging recycling rates

Since the introduction of the deposit return system (DRS) in Hungary last year, significant progress has been made in the management of beverage packaging waste thanks to the joint efforts of producers, consumers, and retailers. One year after the launch, the return rate has already exceeded 80%, and in some months even reached 90%. The availability of REpont reverse vending machines has increasingly become a factor for consumers when choosing where to shop – according to discussions at a sustainability roundtable organised by Coca-Cola HBC Hungary. The event, held as part of the Sziget Festival, brought together industry and government experts to review the first year’s results of the DRS and explore opportunities for further development. The Hungarian Mineral Water, Fruit Juice and Soft Drinks Association also welcomed the introduction of the system and its outstanding results.

The Sziget Festival – whose organisers are committed not only to providing high-quality entertainment but also to promoting sustainability – once again hosted Coca-Cola HBC Hungary’s now traditional, environmentally conscious media discussion. This year’s event focused on packaging innovations, the achievements of the DRS so far, related government involvement and objectives, as well as public attitudes towards sustainability, emphasising the importance of shared responsibility and collective action.

According to Istvánné Bikfalvi, Secretary General of the Hungarian Mineral Water, Fruit Juice and Soft Drinks Association: “The outstanding return and recycling rates are the result of joint efforts by producers, retailers, waste management professionals, and consumers, made possible through close cooperation with regulatory authorities and the government. Member companies of the Hungarian Mineral Water, Fruit Juice and Soft Drinks Association are proud to actively contribute to these achievements and remain committed to ensuring that Hungary’s results are in line with the European Union’s sustainability objectives.”
