Capri-Sun is considering to return to plastic straws in Germany
Juice drink manufacturer Capri-Sun is considering alternatives to paper straws due to customer dissatisfaction. The company plans to apply for a derogation from the Commission.
Capri-Sun, a Swiss-based manufacturer producing in Eppelheim, near Heidelberg, is considering to switch to plastic straws from the paper straw that has been the standard since 2021, following criticism from customers citing that the paper straw is harder to insert into the juice pouch, softens and changes the taste of the juice
Roland Weening, CEO of Capri-Sun, told the Swiss Sonntagszeitung: ‘We are working on using recyclable plastic straws again, at least in Switzerland where, unlike in the EU, there is no ban.”
The company wants to do the same in the neighbouring countries. Weening said he would lobby the Commission for an exemption for Capri-Sun. However, a company spokeswoman stressed that it was too early to talk about the return of plastic straws in Switzerland.
Capri-Sun to make its packaging recyclable
Capri-Sun is currently exploring the possibility of enabling consumers to deposit the polypropylene drinks pouch and the straw into the recyclable plastic waste stream. The classic 200 millilitre version of the drink pouch currently also contains aluminium, which the company would eliminate completely from the packaging in a next step.
