The domestic pork market is struggling with both price declines and a decline in foreign trade. According to AKI data, the producer price of slaughter pork per kilo was 779 forints in July, which is 7.4 percent lower than a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the Central Statistical Office registered a 21.1 percent decrease in live pig exports and a nearly 50 percent decrease in imports. The export of processed pork decreased by 14.5 percent, the volume of total international sales decreased by 12.4 percent, and the value decreased by 17 percent – writes  Agrárszektor.

At the same time, consumer prices remained high: a kilo of minced pork costs 999–1063 forints, a boneless leg costs 1675–2255 forints, a shoulder costs 1500–1899 forints, and a rib costs between 1905–2085 forints on the shelves of supermarket chains.

In an international comparison, the market shows a mixed picture. With stagnant production in the US, the price of fattening pigs is expected to increase by 17 percent, while pork exports fell by 2.4 percent in the first half of the year. In Brazil, exports increased by 12.9 percent, while pork prices rose by 3.1 percent. In the EU, the slaughterhouse entry price for class “E” pigs was 2.05 euros/kg in July, a 4.6 percent decrease year-on-year.
