Foreign trade of green peppers has fallen, but its surplus has increased
According to data from the Central Statistical Office, 95.5 thousand tons of peppers were harvested in Hungary from 1.31 thousand hectares in 2024.
According to data from the Central Statistical Office, the export volume of green peppers decreased to 13.3 thousand tons (-11 percent), and its export value to 19.7 million euros (-10 percent) in the first ten months of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. The import volume decreased to 8.4 thousand tons (-19 percent), and its value to 13.5 million euros (-18 percent) in the same period. The foreign trade surplus of green peppers increased to 6.2 million euros from 5.5 million euros a year earlier. Exports to the largest export market of fresh green peppers, Germany, decreased by 18 percent to 7.51 thousand tons, Slovakia by 33 percent to 1.47 thousand tons, Austria by 11 percent to 1.21 thousand tons, while exports to the Czech Republic increased by 35 percent to 1.28 thousand tons in the first ten months of the year. The largest number of peppers, 2.80 thousand tons (–27 percent), came from Spain, followed by Egypt (–29 percent, 2.52 thousand tons).

The producer price of domestic, kilogram-sized, smaller (30–70 mm) sweet peppers for stuffing decreased by 2 percent to 782 forints/kilogram, while the price of larger (70 mm+) sweet peppers remained unchanged at 1,000 forints/kilogram in the 1st–48th week of 2025, compared to the average price of the same period of the previous year. Imported stuffed sweet peppers arrived until the beginning of April, then appeared again in the offer from the 47th week at an average price of 1,150 forints/kilogram. The producer price of domestic California peppers at the Budapest Wholesale Market increased by 4 percent to 1,332 forints/kilogram in the 16th–47th week of 2025, compared to the average price of the same period of the previous year. Imported (mainly from Spain) bell peppers were available until the end of May, then reappeared in week 41 at an average price of 1,300 forints/kilogram.
