Horseradish export volume has fallen, but its value has increased in 2025

The EU’s horseradish production is around 24-25 thousand tons per year. Half of the total EU horseradish supply is provided by the Hungarian crop. In addition to Hungary, horseradish is produced in larger quantities in the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, Germany and Poland.

According to KSH data, 8.4-8.9 thousand tons of horseradish have been produced in Hungary on 1.2 thousand hectares in recent years, with an average yield of 6.9-7.3 tons/hectare. According to KSH data, the volume of horseradish exports decreased by 13 percent to 9.67 thousand tons, while its value increased by 24 percent to 8.41 billion forints in 2025 compared to the previous year. More than 70 percent of exports went to Germany and Poland. Imports are not significant on an annual basis, amounting to 102.5 tons in the period under review. In 2025, the producer price of domestic fresh horseradish at the Budapest Wholesale Market exceeded the previous year’s price by 22 percent (2,076 forints/kilogram), and remained unchanged in the 1st–9th week of 2026, at 2,006 forints/kilogram.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office, imports of celery root in Hungary decreased by 29 percent to 2,550 tons and exports by 42 percent to 666 tons in 2025 compared to the previous year

80 percent of imports came from the Netherlands, and the largest target market for the goods shipped was Romania. At the Budapest Wholesale Market, the price of domestic celery root packaged in kilograms was 545 forints/kilogram (+6 percent), and that of the product packaged in pieces was 364 forints/piece (–3 percent) in 2025. In the first nine weeks of this year, the price of the product packaged in kilograms decreased by 24 percent to 433 forints/kilogram, and the price of the piece-packed product was 26 percent lower (277 forints/piece) than a year earlier. The wholesale price of the piece-packed celeriac from Poland was 220 forints/piece at the same time. In Hungary, imports of beetroot (with radishes, other similar root vegetables) (mainly from Germany, Italy and Poland) decreased by 5 percent to 6.8 thousand tons, while exports (mainly to Romania) increased by 13 percent to 1.79 thousand tons in 2025 compared to the previous year (KSH). The price of domestic beetroot on the Budapest Wholesale Market increased by 11 percent to 352 forints/kilogram in 2025 compared to the previous year. In the first nine weeks of this year, the price of domestic beetroot was 3 percent lower (319 forints/kilogram) than in the same period in 2025.
