The value of foreign trade in pork fell at the beginning of the year

According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), 2.87 million pigs were kept in Hungary on December 1, 2025, the population increased by 2.4 percent compared to a year earlier and was 0.8 percent more than in June 2025.

According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), Hungary’s live pig exports increased by 18.4 percent to 3,500 tons in January 2026 compared to the quantity sold on the foreign market in January 2025. The main partners were Romania and Moldova. Live pig imports increased by 3.6 percent to 4,600 tons, with Croatia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic being the largest suppliers. The quantity of pork sold on the international market decreased by 7.1 percent (12,400 tons) and its value by 25.6 percent during the observed period. Most pork was shipped to Romania, Italy, Moldova, Croatia, Slovakia and Bulgaria. The volume of pork imports decreased by 19.2 percent (10.3 thousand tons) and the value by 34.7 percent in the first month of 2026 compared to the first month of 2025. More than two-thirds of the pork came from Germany, Spain and Poland. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of domestically produced slaughter pigs, excluding VAT and transport costs, was 521 forints/kilogram of carcass warm weight in February 2026, a decrease of 23.7 percent compared to the average price a year earlier.
