A drop in pork exports
According to the data of the Central Statistical Office, Hungary's live pig exports fell by 25 percent, while Hungary’s imports of live pigs increased by 7 percent in the first nine months of 2014 compared with the previous year. According to the Agricultural Research Institute, the Hungarians sold 3 percent more pork, while pork imports declined by 2 percent.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture it is a very positive fact that the pig population – in accordance with the pig strategy – exceeded 3 million again. The number of pigs was 3.095 million at the time of last year's final count. The five percent reduction in the VAT rate of v live pigs and half pork also had a positive impact on the sector.
