Chinese garlic exports fell
In the first five months of 2021, China exported 635 thousand tons of fresh and dried garlic, which is 20 percent less than the volume of the previous year, agrarszektor.hu wrote. The reason for the decline is the lack of available containers, the significant increase in sea freight rates, and port closures and delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Hungary imports about 1,000 tons of garlic a year, 40-50 percent of which is Chinese goods coming to Hungary via the Netherlands, writes the FruitVeB Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organization and Product Council. In China, the price of garlic fell due to significant domestic stocks, while the world market price rose by 27 percent in May, for example. In late July, heavy rains hit Henan Province, causing the worst floods in history. (agrarszektor.hu)
