Visit Hungary: Pest, Győr-Moson-Sopron and Komárom-Esztergom had the most domestic tourists last year
More than ever before, nearly 18 million tourists arrived at domestic accommodations last year, of which about 9.3 million were Hungarian travelers. According to data from the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK), Pest, Győr-Moson-Sopron and Komárom-Esztergom had the most domestic tourists compared to the population of the counties last year, Visit Hungary told MTI on Monday.
According to the information, domestic tourist traffic reached a peak in 2024, and the winner of the counties was Veszprém, whose accommodations welcomed more than one million domestic guests.
According to data from NTAK, the most domestic tourists traveled from Pest, Győr-Moson-Sopron and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén counties last year, after Budapest. The most popular destinations among them were Siófok, Balatonfüred, Zalakaros, Hajdúszoboszló, Hévíz and Eger. The order of the counties is similar when examining which has the highest proportion of domestic travelers in proportion to the population. The first two places on the top list are again the two largest domestic tourist-sending counties, while the third place goes to Komárom-Esztergom, whose residents mainly visited accommodations in Siófok, Zalakaros and Balatonfüred – they wrote.
Tourists from Békés and Nógrád traveled the furthest from their own counties, who mainly chose Hajdúszoboszló, Siófok and Eger. Residents of Bács-Kiskun, which came in third, mainly targeted Siófok, Gyula and Balatonfüred last year – they said.
The NTAK data also shows how travel destinations change by age group. While the most popular destinations for around 77,000 young tourists from Pest County in 2024 were Siófok, Eger and Szeged, around 131,000 members of the over-65 age group who were departing from the same region preferred Hajdúszoboszló, Hévíz and Cserkeszőlő. According to the announcement, the oldest domestic guest was a woman over 100 years old who visited Hévíz from Fejér County, where she spent 24 nights.
