Nyíregyháza and Varsány represent Hungary in the anniversary competition of the Entente Florale Europe, the European Floral Towns and Villages, whose jury of renowned experts visited our country at the end of June to personally evaluate the two settlements, Visit Hungary told MTI on Monday.

During the visits, the expert panel reviewed the settlements’ efforts in the field of sustainability, their developments regarding green spaces and their programs organized to promote environmental education together with the local communities.

It was announced: The members of the jury arrived in Nyíregyháza on Saturday and visited the public spaces of the city center renovated based on climate adaptation criteria, the Sóstó park forest and the Museum Village, which also presents the garden culture, traditional plants and crops of the region. They also visited the green space solutions of the LEGO factory, which serve as an example of sustainable corporate operations worth following.

The professional delegation visited Varsány on Sunday, and its members particularly appreciated the preservation of the Paloc traditions, as well as the built and natural heritage. The jury also highlighted the primary school environmental education program of the village of Nógrád and the conscious use of local agricultural products as remarkable achievements. The board also praised the regional greenway development connected to Lake Tábi as an important pillar of sustainable tourism, they wrote.

According to the information, a total of 11 settlements from 7 countries are competing in this year’s competition. Nyíregyháza and Varsány won the right to participate internationally as former category grand prizes of Virágos Magyarország, the oldest and most popular environmental beautification competition in our country.

The Entente Florale Europe is one of the most prestigious landscape architecture and environmental beautification competitions in Europe. Its aim is to support livable and sustainable settlements, in which community cooperation plays a prominent role.

Hungary has been participating in the international competition since 1990. So far, Hungary has won 13 gold and 33 silver awards for its excellent floriculture solutions and innovative green projects.

Entente Florale Europe celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Hungary will serve as the rotating president of the international organization until the end of 2025, thus receiving greater attention on the international communication scene, which will create an excellent opportunity for our experts and Hungarian settlements to introduce themselves. The anniversary awards gala will be held on September 27 in the Slovenian city of Velenje, the statement reads.
