Nyíregyháza and Varsány both finished the 50th Entente Florale Europe (EFE) competition, or European Floral Towns and Villages, with a silver rating, the award ceremony of which was held in Velenje, Slovenia, over the weekend – Visit Hungary announced in its statement on Monday.

The award ceremony was attended by around 400 participants from 13 European countries, with Nyíregyháza and Varsány competing from Hungary. Nyíregyháza also won the special prize of the World Urban Parks – EFE Green Space Award, which is awarded by the jury for the high quality of urban green spaces developed and maintained. The pedestrian-friendly, green heart of the city – Kossuth Square, Hősök Square, Bessenyei and Benczúr Squares – can serve as an example for reducing traffic in city centers and creating shady, flower-filled walking areas – the statement said.

In the case of Varsány, the chairman of the jury praised the combination of Paloc traditions and sustainability, as well as the ecotourism potential of Lake Tábi, which offers significant development opportunities for the village. The two settlements won the right to participate internationally as previous category winners of the Flowering Hungary competition.

According to Visit Hungary, the anniversary year is also of particular importance for our country, as this year Hungary holds the presidency of the international organization. One of the greatest successes of this is that France and Italy returned as full members. Another important achievement is that the Hungarian presidency successfully prepared the accession of new Mediterranean and Baltic countries, and Romania is now a regular participant in international competitions

– they added.
