Visit Hungary: In summer, 14% more foreign guests chose Hungary than last year
The expansion of inbound traffic contributed significantly to the results of this summer season, which set new highs.In June-August, compared to 2023, 3 million foreign visitors arrived, 14% more, resulting in almost 8 million nights spent in Hungarian accommodation. After Germany, travelers from the Visegrád countries and the United Kingdom accounted for the most international guest nights. 51% of the total international accommodation traffic was due to the attraction of Budapest, based on the number of foreign guest nights, spa towns stood out among the most popular rural settlements.
There is a boom in tourism in Hungary, which is clearly shown by the fact that the large number of international guests who arrived in Hungary spent nearly 6% more, almost 8 million guest nights, in domestic accommodation compared to last summer. According to the data of the National Tourist Information Center, about half of these, 49%, were registered outside the capital. The number of 1.4 million international visitors visiting the countryside, 5% more than last year, enriched the destinations outside the capital with nearly 4 million guest nights. Thanks to the sales success, revenues from foreigners in the countryside increased by 13% compared to the previous year and reached HUF 67 billion, while the increase at Lake Balaton was 15%. With this, more than 30% of the total income of rural accommodation was provided by international guests. All these results contribute to the fact that the contribution of tourism to the national economy is more than 12% of GDP. The II. and it contributed about 925 million euros to the 2.9 billion euros in the service foreign trade balance of the third quarter. Thus, it ensured about one third of the positive balance.
Based on NTAK data, Budapest was also visited by a record number of 1.7 million foreign travelers in the summer months, their number was almost 23% higher than a year ago. Almost 51% of foreign guest nights in Hungary came from international visitors to the capital. The approximately 4 million international accommodation nights registered in the capital exceeded last June-August by 11%. After the British and German tourists, travelers from the United States of America spent the most foreign guest nights in the capital, and hotels recorded 12% more traffic from them. Thanks to the outstanding international tourist demand and the attractiveness of the capital city, almost 90% of accommodation revenues in Budapest, nearly HUF 103 billion, came from international guests.
