The registration period for the 2026 Flowering Hungary Competition has begun. The organizing committee, as well as Visit Hungary, a subsidiary of the Hungarian Tourist Board, are waiting for registrations from settlements for the country’s largest environmental beautification initiative until May 15, Visit Hungary told MTI on Wednesday.

According to the information, the competition, which is now in its 33rd year, has now become a large-scale movement that goes far beyond flowery public spaces: the goal is to create an orderly, livable, sustainable settlement environment, strengthen community cooperation, and shape an environmentally conscious attitude.

One of the most important messages of this year’s program is that environmentally conscious thinking begins with everyday, local actions

The plants planted and cared for together not only shape the image of the settlement, but also the outlook of future generations: children who grow up in a green environment will later turn to nature with greater responsibility and take better care of their environment – they announced. The organizers are announcing the competition in five settlement categories, from small villages to large cities to districts of the capital, in which Hungarian-speaking settlements across the border will also participate this year. Several ministries and numerous professional organizations are also offering valuable prizes to the competitors.

Several thematic awards will also be presented, for example, the Main Square and Tree Line of the Year will be recognized, and the Kindergarten of the Year and the Green Innovation of the Year will also be awarded

Nominations can be made again in the category of Flowering City and Village Walks, and the recognition can be won by settlements where tourists have the opportunity to discover special green spaces, parks and tree lines on guided walks. Special emphasis will be placed on greening programs implemented with the involvement of local communities: the Flowering Community Award rewards initiatives implemented in cooperation between the municipality and the population. This year, the repertoire of awards will be expanded: the National Landscape Architect Award recognizes the local professional knowledge necessary for the professional operation of green infrastructure.
