Grapevine golden yellow disease has also appeared in the Villány region – Nébih calls for increased protection
The Grapevine flavescence dorée (FD) pathogen, which causes grape golden yellow disease, is currently confirmed to be present in 12 counties, and 15 out of 22 wine regions are now affected. It has also reached the settlement of Harkány in the Villány Wine Region. The National Food Chain Safety Office calls for protection against the disease and its vector, which causes serious plant health damage.

Among the white and red grape varieties found in the historically important Villány Wine Region, a large number of varieties susceptible to grape golden yellow disease occur (e.g. Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Cabernet sauvignon, Pinot noir). Therefore, it is important to prevent the further spread of the quarantine-classified phytoplasma disease.
Control and stopping the spread of the disease can only be achieved through effective preventive measures
Therefore, Nébih draws the attention of grape growers to the serious phytosanitary and economic risk of the disease, as well as to the current measures necessary to control the disease’s vector, the American grapevine cicada. Thanks to the measures taken so far, the historical wine regions in the north of the country remain free of the pathogen. Grape growers who purchase and use unverified propagation material or fail to control grapevine cicadas must take increased account of the risk of the pest appearing. If the pest appears, official phytosanitary measures will be taken.
