On Monday morning, several major international websites and online services became unavailable worldwide – including Reuters, IMDB, Getty Images, as well as platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Snapchat, Reddit and HBO Max. The outage also affected banking systems: customers of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland were unable to log in to their mobile banking, and in many places card payments were also unavailable.

According to Sky News, the problem was caused by a regional error in Amazon Web Services (AWS). The US cloud provider said that an error occurred in DNS resolution at the US-EAST-1 data center, resulting in “increased error rates” and service outages. The company’s engineers have already identified the source of the problem and are working on several parallel paths to recovery.

The outage affected dozens of industries: Disney+, United Airlines, McDonald’s, Fortnite, Canva and Peloton services were also disrupted, and some travel and dating apps (such as Hinge) did not work.

Crypto exchange Coinbase reassured its customers that “all funds are safe”, however, according to regular updates, the error also temporarily affected the stability of digital payment systems.

According to experts, the incident once again highlighted the vulnerability of the global digital infrastructure, the excessive centralization of which – especially in Built on AWS and a few other large providers – a single failure could set off a chain reaction across online segments of the global economy.
