Hungarian IKEA sets world record: Soroksár will be the world’s largest fulfillment center
By 2026, IKEA’s Soroksár store will be transformed into the world’s largest online fulfillment center, raising logistics operations not only in Hungary but also in the entire region to a new level. The goal of the nearly 50 million euro investment is to serve online orders faster, more sustainably and more efficiently, it was announced at the store’s reopening on Tuesday, according to an article by Pénzcentrum.
Double capacity, half a million more packages per year
As a result of the development, the number of packages delivered annually will increase from 540,000 to 950,000, while the automated logistics system will significantly reduce operating costs and service times. IKEA will not only double its online ordering capacity, but will also continue to preserve the classic store experience.
“Hungary is a key market for us, and this investment secures our future,” emphasized David McCabe, IKEA’s CEO for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.
Hybrid model – digital and physical shopping go hand in hand
The transformation is not only about warehouse capacity, but also about a completely new shopping experience. IKEA aims to create a hybrid model by combining physical and digital shopping, which is more efficient and sustainable.
“We are constantly working on how to reach as many people as possible with our affordable home furnishing products, both physically and digitally, in the most sustainable way,” said Tolga Öncü, Head of Retail Business at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group).
Interactive solutions take shopping to a new level
A new level of shopping experience is being created by introducing interactive and digital tools: there will be product advisors available via live chat, carpet projectors and digital kiosks. Visitors can explore the store through interactive exhibitions and new ideas.
“The Soroksár store is completely different from any other IKEA store in the world,” said McCabe.
