The Hungarian McDonald’s is celebrating its 35th birthday with a montage film by a world-famous director
The montage film for the 35th birthday of the Hungarian McDonald’s was made by György Pálfi from hundreds of video recordings and photographs of guests and employees, and the music was composed by the band Margaret Island.
The world-famous director and his team created the several-minute “Meki 35 community film” using a variety of film techniques in hundreds of working hours. The video, which starts before the regime change, intertwines the old mek’s birthday photos, the most special restaurant moments and the social media experiences of our time. The earliest image material used was the opening of the first restaurant in Hungary, while the most recent ones were taken this fall. The staff tried to select as much and the most varied content as possible from the exceedingly high number of employee and visitor images received at the request of the Hungarian McDonald’s.
“It was an exciting challenge to make this film. At the very beginning, we vowed to compile the etude, in addition to archival materials, working only from those received. The music, i.e. the element that most determines the rhythm and mood of the film, was already ready when the first images arrived. We expected moving images and videos, but the majority of the material turned out to be still images and family photos. So we had to adapt our concept to this. We received so many photos that we decided to use as much as possible of the many experiences that people shared. Therefore, we arranged them kaleidoscopically, using split images. That way, almost everyone who wanted to be a part of this birthday film can find their own, personal memory in it.”
– said György Pálfi about the making of the montage film.
