Wired connections in Eastern Europe in 2025: Hungary tops the nPerf rankings
nPerf, an independent expert in telecommunications performance, has published its analysis of wired internet connections in Eastern European countries for 2025. The results highlight the race towards optical networks and modern cable technologies, with five countries standing out with different strategies: Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Moldova and Slovakia.
In 2025, wired internet performance in Eastern Europe reflects different infrastructure strategies. Based on data from user measurements, nPerf has published a wired internet performance ranking for the region, led by five countries: Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Moldova and Slovakia.
Hungary: leader in download speeds
Hungary leads the rankings with an average download speed of 182.0 Mbps, an upload speed of 97.7 Mbps and a latency of 27.0 ms. These results, among the best in Europe, reflect a modern infrastructure that combines optical network (FTTP) and the latest generation cable (DOCSIS 3.1).
“Hungary is a good example of the effectiveness of an ambitious network development strategy and successful modernization,” emphasizes Renaud Keradec, CEO of nPerf.
Slovenia: best latency
Slovenia achieves download speeds of 155.0 Mbps and upload speeds of 66.7 Mbps, while showing the lowest latency in the ranking (21.4 ms). This fast response is due to the optimized network architecture and the proximity of content delivery network (CDN) servers. These act as intermediaries, allowing users further away from the main server to experience the same fast response times.
Romania: the best upload speed
Romania stands out with the highest upload speed of the panel, 151.0 Mbps, while the download speed is 173.0 Mbps and the latency is 30.6 ms. These figures reflect the extensive FTTP coverage, which offers a symmetrical user experience, ideal for remote working, 4K streaming and cloud services.
Moldova: symmetrical speeds and a mature optical network
Moldova surprises with symmetrical download and upload speeds of 141.0/121.0 Mbps and a latency of 23.9 ms. These results are due to the extremely high optical coverage (FTTx), which is used by 90.6% of wired subscribers, as well as a favorable regulatory environment.
Slovakia: stable and promising performance
Slovakia closes the top five with download speeds of 111.0 Mbps, upload speeds of 51.2 Mbps and latency of 25.8 ms. These values reflect an infrastructure that is in the process of transitioning to optical networks, while showing continuous improvements in coverage and quality of service.
Infrastructure and demand-driven performance
The ranking highlights three main trends:
1. The dominance of optical networks (FTTP) and modern cable technologies (DOCSIS 3.1): the best-performing countries have widely deployed these solutions, ensuring high speeds and low latency.
2. Upload speed is an increasingly important aspect: with the spread of remote work and cloud services, countries such as Romania and Moldova are focusing on symmetric infrastructures, which are key for professional use.
3. Latency as an indicator of the quality of user experience: Slovenia and Moldova demonstrate that optimized network architecture and dense optical coverage significantly improve response times.
