Seed Association: procurement of small garden seeds has started

The season of colorful bagged seeds is at its peak in March and April. According to the Seed Association Interprofessional Organization and Product Council, hobby gardeners in our country can choose from about 1,000 types of vegetables and 500 types of flowers, and the turnover could amount to about 6 billion forints this year – the organization drew attention in its statement on Tuesday.

Many people only buy seeds of heat-loving plants, such as beans, cucumbers or sweet corn, at the end of April or beginning of May. According to the association, about 17-20 million colorful bagged seeds are sold on the domestic market annually. The classic vegetable species are still the most popular among hobby gardeners: the demand for seeds of carrots, parsley, cucumbers, beets, zucchini and sweet corn is stable. In recent years, interest in special vegetables has increased, such as the essential herb of Italian cuisine, several varieties of basil, as well as tomato specialties and previously less known lettuces and chili peppers. For lovers of Asia, Chinese cabbage, ribbed cabbage (pak-choi), melon seeds, Asian lettuce, Hokkaido-type pumpkin (Uchiki kuri) seeds are an opportunity. They also mentioned that one of the defining trends in recent years is the rise of urban gardening. More and more people are growing vegetables and herbs on a balcony or terrace. In parallel, the eco-conscious attitude is strengthening, they added.
