Seed Association: the value of seeds purchased for small gardens is close to HUF 5 billion
Work in the hobby gardens starts after Easter; according to estimates, the market players sell 20 million small garden seeds in colorful bags each year, worth about HUF 5 billion, but their volume decreases by 3-6 percent every year – the Seed Association of Professional Organizations and Product Councils told MTI on Tuesday.
According to the announcement, the Hungarian home garden seed market offers more than 1,000 varieties. They are looking for seeds of the classic vegetable species – carrots, parsley, cucumbers, beets, zucchini, green peas, sweet corn – in the largest quantities. In recent years, with the development of gastroculture, the demand for special vegetables, such as chili peppers and cherry tomatoes, has increased. The majority of hobby seeds can be purchased through three main commercial channels: multinational food chains, DIY stores, and traditional farm and garden stores. In the announcement, Ferenc Marton, a member of the Vegetable Section Committee of the Seed Association, recommended that beginner gardeners grow vegetables that are easy to grow: squash, lettuce, zucchini, cucumbers, radishes, green peas, and green beans. The expert also explained that the bagged seed retains its germination capacity within the validity period under suitable storage conditions. It must be stored in dry, cool conditions until use. “We would like home garden vegetable growing to become more popular again.” Chemical-free, environmentally friendly cultivation is the basis of our healthy diet – said Ferenc Marton in the association’s announcement.
The main tasks of the Seed Association Interprofessional Organization and Product Council (VSZT), which was founded in 1993, include, among other things, the development of proposals related to the sector, as well as the national level coordination of the production and market behavior of plant breeders, seed propagators, processors and distributors, and participation in the work of state administration bodies. , decision preparations, opinions.
