Rabies was detected in a cattle from the counties of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg
A grazed beef cattle died of rabies on November 13, 2023, in the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg. The infection was also confirmed by the laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih). Both wild and domestic mammals are susceptible to rabies, which is why Nébih repeatedly draws the attention of animal owners to be cautious and to notify the animal health authority immediately in case of suspicion.

On November 14, 2023, the Nébih laboratory confirmed rabies in a cattle showing nervous system symptoms in the settlement of Tiszakorod in the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county. The animal died the day before the laboratory examination. Specialists of the county government office have started the epidemiological investigation. Nébih immediately notified the National Public Health and Pharmaceutical Center, as well as the European Union and the World Organization for Animal Health, of the case and its details.
The incident occurred in the area of a wildlife management unit where Nébih initiated the ordering of several epidemiological measures, including increased surveillance, due to the positive cases that occurred last year and this year.
Aircraft vaccination of the fox population has been taking place in this area for years, which was stopped on the Ukrainian side due to the war, so the infection probably entered the country through infected animals there. The authority will maintain the measures ordered in the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg as long as the epidemiological situation justifies it. Rabies also poses a threat to humans, so protecting domestic and wild animals also serves to prevent human diseases.
