Climate change: the science will rescue the wine-growing regions
Without Merlot, the Bordeaux wine region would be like Tokaj without Furmint. How the world's best-known wine regions will adapt to the impacts of the climate change without losing their identity. Therefore, experiments are conducted to delay the ripening period – agrarszektor.hu wrote.
The dry heat expected for this year does not scare the French winemakers because, as Bernard Farges, president of the interprofessional committee of the famous Bordeaux wine region told AFP, the early harvest is an improvement in quality. Agricultural researcher, Kees van Leeuwen, however, believes that within 20-30 years the Merlot is likely to ripen in August, which makes it lose its usual freshness, however due to the higher sugar content the alcohol content of wine will increase.
