Dangerous substances have been found in the products of Chinese e-commerce giants
The security risks of products sold by Chinese online giants such as Shein, Temu and AliExpress have once again come under the spotlight. According to the latest investigation by the Seoul authorities, women’s accessories sold by several popular e-commerce platforms contain dangerous substances, the amount of which significantly exceeds the acceptable level, Pénzcentrum reported following France24.
In recent years, these online stores have gained extreme popularity worldwide, thanks to their fashionable and affordable products. However, rapid growth has resulted in increased controls, particularly in the European Union and South Korea. Officials in Seoul conduct regular inspections of products sold on online platforms. During the most recent inspection, 144 products were examined, and in many cases, goods that did not meet legal requirements were found.
For example, Shein shoes were found to contain extremely high levels of phthalates, which exceeded the legal limit by 229 times. These chemicals can pose serious health risks, such as reduced sperm count and infertility. In addition, formaldehyde exceeding twice the permissible limit was found in Shein’s caps, while dioxane and methanol were found in their nail polishes.
Worrying amounts of lead were also found in the insoles of sandals produced by Temu, which exceeded the acceptable level by 11 times. Seoul authorities have called on the companies involved to withdraw these dangerous products from the market. Kim Tae-hee, an official from the Seoul authority, emphasized that special attention should be paid to products that come into direct contact with the skin, such as sandals and hats.
When contacted by AFP, Shein said they work closely with independent testing agencies to ensure product safety and ensure their suppliers are compliant. Already in April, the European Union introduced stricter security rules for Shein and other digital companies, especially with regard to the protection of minors.
