Tourism in Lake Balaton shows a mixed picture – yet there is reason for optimism
The tourist season at Lake Balaton did not start smoothly: the weather and the shortening booking times had a significant impact on the development of guest traffic. However, according to the president of the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association, there are encouraging signs for the second half of the summer and the autumn – especially in the more popular destinations.
From Tihany to Siófok: the picture is not uniform
Zoltán Somlyai, president of the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association, told InfoRádió: while in some parts of the region – for example in Tihany, Balatonfüred, Siófok or Keszthely – there is strong guest interest, in other settlements the season started more restrained. The main reasons for this are the extreme weather conditions and uncertain booking habits.
“We see a minimal increase in occupancy, this applies to both domestic and foreign guests, but everyone said that the season started quite badly,” said the president, adding that the season now seems to be stabilizing, and in several places there is significant demand for September.
Weather-driven tourism and short booking windows
It is typical of Lake Balaton tourism that weather forecasts decisively influence guest traffic. The time between booking accommodation and arrival, the so-called “booking window”, has shortened significantly in recent years: many guests only make their decision a few days before departure – often based on the current weather.
However, this phenomenon poses a serious challenge for accommodation providers. “If someone books a room for which they have not paid in advance and a bad weather report arrives, they can easily cancel their accommodation,” pointed out Zoltán Somlyai. Therefore, accommodation providers are increasingly requesting a deposit or even full payment in advance to reduce losses resulting from last-minute cancellations.
