Veganuary: many Hungarians sympathize with the meat-free diet
Compared to the 2022 results, more Hungarians pay attention to health-conscious nutrition, and 60 percent of them include one meat-free day in their week, which is increasingly motivated by health preservation in addition to saving money. Among those who, according to their own admission, put a lot of emphasis on healthy eating, a more critical attitude towards red meat increased by 5% in one year, and there is almost no Hungarian who has not heard of plant-based products, Nestlé Hungária revealed in from the second large national research conducted in connection with Veganuary.
At the end of 2023, Nestlé Hungária also assessed the attitude of the Hungarian population towards healthy eating and meat consumption, repeating the representative research on the same topic in 2022. Among other things, they sought answers to the extent to which the Veganuary phenomenon, which is becoming increasingly popular abroad, is known in our country, i.e. Vegan January, an initiative aimed at reducing meat consumption, but they also examined how much the population’s willingness to abandon animal-derived foods changed in one year or to reduce.
In 2022, 52% of respondents stated that they would give up at least one type of animal food or meat product. Compared to this, the population’s willingness to do so increased to 58% a year later, which particularly affected processed meat products and red meat. Among those who place greater emphasis on a balanced diet, the proportion of those who believe that reducing or eliminating the consumption of red meat may be the key to a healthy diet rose from 23% to 28%.
